There was an automated Alvarez-Yairi serial number decoder but link no longer working. According to D Hughes who ran the Yahoo Group for Yairi-Alvarez Yairi the 'automated' dating site does not usually give the correct info when you input the numbers. But i dont know ive looked at all the alvarez on the site and on ebay and it looks like none of them i can kinda describe it: the two backwards A's on headstock. Says alvarez artist on the sticker inside. Has a serial number with it. A redish pick gaurd. Have not a clue what neck or top it has.
When Kazuo Yairi began designing and hand-crafting these guitars in the 1960's, he was deliberately competing with Martin, Gibson, and Guild for the higher end guitar market in the U.S. This DY-38 'Wood Ridge' model is an example of the quality and sound which he was able to produce using the highest quality materials, the best Japanese craftsmen, and his own modifications of the best American designs. Today, the prices of the Alvarez-Yairi acoustic guitars range from $1200 to $5000 and beyond, and grateful owners will tell you they're worth every penny.
I guess I should say a word or two about the model number and year of this guitar, since there is some confusion judging from The Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars. The label clearly says that the date of manufacture is 1988 and that it is a Model DY-38, which in the book makes it a 'Wood Ridge;' however, the book also says that the DY-38 'Wood Ridge' was made from 1991-2004, while it lists a DY-45 'Wood Ridge' manufactured from 1975-1998. Neither set of specs quite matches this guitar, and presumably that makes it kind of a transitional model which included some non-standard specs, whatever that means to you. I'm gonna go with the ol' label and call it a 1988 DY-38 'Wood Ridge.' Okay?
This guitar (serial # 36355) has a dreadnought style body with a solid spruce top and mahogany back, sides and neck. There is full black binding on both top and back, a multi-stripe inlaid rosette, a black tear drop pick guard, a rosewood bridge with black white-dot pins, a 14/20-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot/fleur-de-lis inlay and a 25.5' scale, and a black headstock inlay set off by the inlaid pearl Yairi logo and the steel-buttoned A-Y chrome tuners (note: there is one Grover replacement). This is one impressive-looking guitar for the money.
Even more impressive is its playability and its huge sound. The frets have relatively little wear on them, and the neck is surprisingly comfortable for my kind of small hands, measuring 1 11/16' at the nut. The more than twenty-five years of seasoning of the quality solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides make this about as resonant and dominant-sounding a guitar as you will find for anywhere near this price, with great big bass and clear ringing trebles. Since this guitar has been retro-fitted with a Dean Markley Promag Plus sound hole pickup, whole new vistas of sound and volume are open to you.
Like most 28-year-old guitars that have been played, there are a few dings in the top and elsewhere, especially visible in picture 3 around the jack installation [which is kinda homely itself], and a repaired crack in the top lower bout. Other than that, there are no structural issues with this guitar: the neck's straight, the top's flat, the tuners are tight, and there is plenty of wear left in the frets. The action is currently set up fast and low at under 3/32' at the 12th fret low E.
The vintage original hard shell case is structurally perfect, with the Alvarez logo displayed on the top. The hardware all works, and the plush interior is clean and naturally fits this guitar like the proverbial glove. While it does have a few external dings, they certainly don't detract from the outstanding protection the case provides for this valuable instrument.
Buyer pays a flat rate of $55 for insurance and shipping to the lower 48 states; shipping costs elsewhere will be negotiated as necessary. Payment by Paypal is preferred; cashiers and personal checks are acceptable, but checks must clear before the guitar will be shipped.
I have tried to be perfectly clear and accurate in describing this instrument, so its return will not be accepted unless it can be shown that it was egregiously misrepresented in this listing. Please ask any questions you might have before bidding.
Good luck!
Yairi and early Alvarez Yairi models used the Emperor dating code.these are the numbers stamped on the heelblock of the guitar. Tamarin starinnij gobelen noti dlya fortepiano english. There are a few exceptions, especially after 1999, when they started to change how they date them. I am trying to learn about the specs of the various Alvarez Yairi Guitar Models of the 1970s and 1980s. There seems to be quite a few Model numbers in the Alvarez Yairi lines.
I came across a K. Yairi on CL locally and Im not sure if the person realizes what they have. Its a 19xx model, 6 string, steel, spruce/mahogany (I think) but so far I have no pics so thats all I know. Do any of you guys that own Yairis have a 90's model or know where I could link up to a catalog of those model years? There is not a huge amount of info on K.
Yairi that i have been able to find, other than a lot of speculation over the genealogy of K. Yairi but not much else. I emailed Alvarez US and Mr. Kruszka said id need the heelblock or model number, not the serial number.

Yairi is known as one of the best guitars built back in the 70's. Yairi ceased to exist in the 80's. A similar brand name, K. Yairi, still exists, but the company claims that there is no relation to S.
Unfortunately in recent years, a new company with the same brand name began selling guitars made in China and by contractors in Japan, creating confusion among new buyers. The truth about S. Yairi is not well known. What happened to the master luthier, Sadao Yairi (a.k.a. Why does Kazuo Yairi (K. Yairi, Alvarez-Yairi) remain silent about the history and his relation to his uncle, Sadao? What is the secret behind the lifetime-guaranteed neck?
Only in the past several years some clues have been put together by enthusiasts. Still, there are more questions than answers. My guitar, YD302, is the low-end model of S. Yairi, built in 1976.
We may not know much about the guitar maker, but if you listen, the guitar itself tells us a story, something wonderful about the people who built it. Just hold it, play, and you'll know why some of us think that S. Yairi may be the best guitars ever built. Brother Yuichi This S. Yairi is the first guitar I owned. Before this, I was playing my brother's left-handed electric guitar. In order to play right-handed, I peeled off and flip the nut and reverse the strings.
When my brother plays it, I put it back to its left-handed mode. I repeated this operation for a few years until my brother's great patience finally ran out.
One day, Yuichi asked me if I wanted a guitar of my own. I said yes, but I got no money to buy one. I was in Middle School back then. A little over a year passed and he asked me again if I wanted a guitar of my own.

Anyways, my brother smiled and slowly pulled out a stack of money from his pocket. He was holding 60,000 yen. It was back in the mid 70s; that money would be $1,000 or more today. He said, 'you can buy a guitar with this money if you like, but I don't want you to buy a cheap crap.

If I approve your choice, I'll give you this money.' It turned out that he'd been saving the money from the moment he asked me the question a year before. He was still in college back then, and I recall he had a part-time job at a noodle shop, not really a well-paying job. It took him a year to save that much money. I went out to a couple of guitar shops in Tokyo, did a lot of research, and came up with S. Yairi as my final choice.

My decision was fairly easy, even though there were so many choices from guitar makers like Yamaha and Takamine. Yairi, even the low-end model, sounded much better than any guitars I played, including high-end models from competing brands. My brother approved my choice, and the S. Yairi YD302 became the guitar of my own. A year later, I ran away from home. My only possession was this guitar and a school bag.
